Dear Troop 410 Parent/Leader,

Our challenging and interesting troop outings should provide the opportunity for scouts to learn skills and to have fun without risking injury. That's the goal of the outing program. With that in mind, we want to have an outings program that consistently meets these objectives, regardless of which adults lead the outings. For this reason, we have prepared some short guideline documents to help ensure a consistent level of quality and safety of our outings:

.            Troop 410 Outings "Tips of the Trade"

.            Troop 410 Outings Worksheet - providing a timeline of recommended activities ranging from 6 weeks prior to the outing, to 1 week after
. . . this is the overall plan to use, to have a successful outing.

.            Outing Permission slip - providing a summary of the trip, its schedule, and Detachable permission form.

.            Outing sign-up sheet- for posting during meetings while recruiting for the event

.            Outing Attendance records for adults and scouts - For reporting to the Treasurer and others.

*** We require that at least one registered and trained adult leader be present at every Troop 410 Scouting activity.

Keep in mind that it is required to have at least two adults at every Scouting activity, one of which is registered with the council and has completed the Youth Protection training.  Youth Protection training can be completed online at: http://www.troop410.com  using the link provided at the upper right on the main page under BSA Online Learning or by CLICKING HERE.

(At the end of the training you will be able to print a card showing that you have completed the training.)

A key to our continued success is getting everyone involved. Please help when you can. Your involvement supports your son as well as your Troop.

Thanks!

Tim Weiler

Tips of the Trade

Prepare in advance - see the Troop 410 Worksheet .

Use the Patrol Method - leadership and teamwork skills are not learned when adults do all of the leadership and planning. Note that using the Patrol Method, e.g. allowing the boys to plan their own outing food and activities, can take more time than you expect.

Safety - be familiar with the BSA Guide to Safe Scouting  (Online Edition). This is an easy to read document. You can borrow a hard copy from the Scoutmaster or the Committee Outings Chair. During the outing, you as outing leader must exercise discretion on behalf of the boys. Finding that line between having fun and undue risk can be difficult but do the best you can.

Encourage Attendance - Begin announcing details of the outing at least 2 weeks prior to the trip. Do your homework and know about the location and/or planned outing activity. The best way to get our Scouts excited about an outing is to be excited about it yourself .

Get help from other adults - you'll have more fun and pass on the expertise. If you are unable to follow through on your commitment to coordinate an outing, please find a replacement as soon as possible and notify the Outing Chair or Scoutmaster.

Have fun!
